Rachel Joyce in conversation with Niamh Cusack

Join author and playwright Rachel Joyce as she talks to actor Niamh Cusack about acting,

writing for the stage and their time together at the RSC.

Rachel Joyce is the award-winning author of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry,

The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy, and Miss Benson’s Beetle.  Rachel’s

writing career began in radio drama and she has written many afternoon plays for

BBC Radio 4, as well as major adaptations of all the Bronte novels, and Henry

James. Rachel wrote the screenplay for the film of ‘The Unlikely Pilgrimage of

Harold Fry’ as well as the book for the recent musical adaptation which transferred

 to the Haymarket Theatre in London in 2026.

Niamh Cusack has had a successful career acting on television and in major films

as well as performing many leading roles on the stage including Desdemona,

Juliet and Lady Macbeth for the RSC.  Her work at the National Theatre includes

lead roles in ‘His Dark Materials,’ and ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-

time,’ and she has worked with actors such as Christopher Eccleston, Toby Jones

and Ben Wishaw and directors Sam Mends and Shane Meadows.  In 2012 she was

nominated as Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Playboy of the Western

World at the Old Vic.
